Week twenty-seven, Ugh!

I ready to scream at my body. I've been walking, mind you, not a long walk. Half a mile to a mile each night. Occasionally riding my bike. And all my body can do is take on water when I eat something that is too salty.

The Sunday after updating you on week twenty-four, I ate a ham meal. The salt put over 2 pounds of water onto my, finally under 157 pound, weight. Then my monthly kept it there. I've been fighting to get back into the 156 numbers, but, alas, it's not in the cards. I still jumping around the 157's.

The great news? I have to purchase in between clothing and my husband remarked on the loss of love handles. I was hoping to lose the weight fast enough to not have to purchase clothing in between, but it still feels great to know my body is smaller and I need smaller clothing.

Weigh-in:

Week twenty-seven--157.6 pounds. Week twenty-six--157.2 pounds. Week twenty-five--157.5 pounds. Week twenty-four--156.2 pounds. Beginning weight 188 pounds.Three week gain from week twenty-four--1.4 pounds. Total loss--30.4 pounds. Average loss per week--1.13 pound per week.

Benefits moment:

Watermelon--Though 92% of watermelon is composed of water, the other 8% is loaded with nutrients, especially antioxidants. These include vitamin A, vitamin C, and lycopene, which helps to neutralize free radicals.

You can always buy pre-cut and packaged watermelon at the supermarket, but you will get a lot more for your money if you opt for the whole fruit. Look for a smooth rind with one side darker than the other. This indicates ripeness, as the sun darkens the exposed side of the melon while the side touching the ground stays its original color. The melon should feel heavy for its size.

Hang in there, I am, even though I don't want to. Happy healthy eating, getting more exercise, losing weight and becoming healthier.

Week Twenty-four

Monies been really tight, so I haven't had the variety I like, but it hasn't been bad. Ate a lot more spinach than I usually do as I like kale. Mangos have been hit or miss as the crop isn't totally ready. On the good side, the hog plums have been great. They don't really work in the nutriblast since the seed is so big and the fruit so little, but they're great off the tree. This year is the biggest yield I've had since planting the tree almost ten years ago. I think that's mostly due to the hurricanes in 2005 that removed many of its branches.

Still not exercising and I know I need to. It's so hot in the mornings. 5 am the temperature is already in the 80's, sometimes even over 85 degrees. Still you'll see a great surprise in the weigh-in section.

Weigh-in

Week twenty-four--156.2 pounds. Week twenty-three--158.3 pounds. Beginning weight 188 pounds. One week loss--2.1 pounds. Total loss--31.8. Average loss per week--1.33 pounds per week.

See what I mean? I guess the weight fell into the 157 range enough over the past few months that it decided to go into the 156. This was yesterdays weight as well as today. That's a good sign.

Benefits moment:

Strawberries--This sweet favorite is loaded with heart-protecting, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory phenols. Strawberries have wildly versatile flavor and compliment a wide variety of other flavors and textures, making them perfect additions to your Nutriblast! (They've been well priced for several weeks and they've been part of my nutriblasts many times)

Smaller to medium-sized berries generally have more flavor than their larger counterparts. Make sure to choose plump, firm, bright red berried attached to green spotless leaves. Strawberries are very perishable and susceptible to mold, so remove any moldy or damaged strawberries from the container prior to eating, and enjoy within one or two days. To freez, follow the same process as outlined for raspberries.

Week Twenty-three

Okay, I've been out of town and a bit discouraged about the weight-loss. I've seen 157 several times between weekly reports, but the weight always seems to go back into 158 and bounce around the low end.

I took my Nutribullet with me, but was able to make an average of one drink a day. I really need two or three. Often I preferred the offered food rather than make my drink. I had plenty of choices for the Nutriblast, so I can't use that as an excuse. We went to the grocery store the first day and purchased a good selection. Now I'm fighting to get back down due to putting on two pounds and knowing the only way for greater loss is to exercise. I've done what I can with the drinks alone. I know that's why my weight has stayed pretty stable over the past few weeks.

Weigh-in

Week Twenty-three--158.3. Week Twenty-two--160.4 pounds. Week Nineteen--158 pounds. Beginning weight--188 pounds. Weight gain from week nineteen--.3 pounds. Weight loss from week twenty-two--2.1 pounds. Total weight loss--29.7 pounds. Average loss per week--1.29 pounds.

Benefits moment:

Raspberries--Who can resist the delightfully soft, sweet-tart raspberry? These little fruits are cancer-fighting powerhouses full of free radical-blocking phytonutrients and antioxidant ellagitannins unique to the raspberry.

Like all berries, raspberries are extremely perishable; so only buy them a day or two before eating. Look for berries that are firm, plump, and richly colored. Avoid berries that have been packed too tightly if you're buying them prepackaged. Raspberries freeze very well and can keep for up to a year if stored properly. Freeze the berries in a single layer on a cookie sheet, and then transfer to an airtight plastic bag. and a squeeze of lemon to preserve color!
(copied from the Nutribullet pocket nutritionist)

I love raspberries. Miss my patch we had in Virginia. Couldn't get them to take down here in Florida.

Week Nineteen

I'm pleased with my weight loss. Each week has brought it's own ups and downs. I'm still not exercising, so can't complain about the slow process, but I've heard slow loss is better than fast losses. I've hung around the upper 150's for the past few weeks and should take that as an indication I need to change some things. I'm still drinking, most days, two Nutriblasts and eating small meals in between. I'm accustomed to eating something every 2 - 3 hours. I try to replace some of those with a glass of water. I read an article that said sometimes the need for water is mistaken for a need for food. So I drink first, eat second.

The garden is pretty much done, except for the herbs and flowers. I'm going to check around and see if there are some squashes that can be grown. It's too hot at night for tomatoes to set, so the plant will grow, but no fruit. :(

Weigh-in

Week seventeen--157.7 pounds. Week sixteen--158.4 pounds. Beginning weight--188 pounds. One week loss--0.7 pounds. Total loss--30.3 pounds. Average loss per week--1.78 pounds.

Week eighteen--159.3 pounds. Week seventeen--157.7 pounds. Beginning weight--188 pounds. One week gain--1.6 pounds. Total loss--28.7 pounds. Average loss per week--1.59 pounds.

Week nineteen--158 pounds. Week eighteen--159.3 pounds. Beginning weight--188 pounds. One week loss--1.3 pounds. Total loss--30 pounds. Average loss per week--1.58 pounds.

Benefits moments:

Plums--Juicy summer season plums offer significant antioxidant protectioin with their high quantities of phenols and vitamin C--the latter of which also assists your body in iron absorption!

The best plums are deeply colored and often covered with a whitish "wax bloom." Look for fruits that are free of bruises and punctures, and yield to gentle pressure. They will be slightly softer at the tip when ripe. Ripe plums can be refrigerated for a few days until they are ready to be eaten.

Week Sixteen

Although this says week sixteen, I won't be able to give an accurate weigh-in for the sixteenth week. I was camping in Inverness, Florida from Thursday evening until Sunday morning. I didn't take my bullet as we were tent camping, but I should have. We had electricity. I saw a carrier for the bullet and will get that for our next trip. Guess I can always bring the converter. I put on about a pound over the weekend. We were mostly sitting since we were four-wheeling with the Land Rover Club and the trip up took five hours.

Weigh-in

Week Fifteen--160.3 pounds. Week fourteen--161.9 pounds. Beginning weight--188 pounds. One week loss--1.6 pounds. Total loss--27.7 pounds. Average loss per week--1.85 pounds.

Week Sixteen (kind of. Used my weight for one day early since I wasn't near a scale for the next three days.)--158.4 pounds. Week Fifteen weight--160.3 pounds. Beginning weight--188 pounds. One week loss--1.9 pounds. Total loss--29.6 pounds. Average loss per week--1.85 pounds.

Benefits moment:

Pineapples--Just one cup of sweet, refreshing pineapple supplies 76.5% of the daily-recommended amount of manganese--a trace mineral essential for generating energy and antioxidants. Pineapple also contains vitamin C, which supports immunity. Additionally, pineapple soothes digestion and provides anti-inflammatory benefits. Chew on that!

Ripe pineapple will smell sweetly fragrant at its base. Choose fruits that seem heavy for their size. While there is generally no difference in quality between smaller and larger fruits, their density indicates juiciness. Make sure your pineapple is ripe when you purchase it: it will not ripen further after it has been picked.

Made an incredible breakfast from a FB post:

Place 2 sliced apples, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, pinch salt in the bottom of the crock pot.
Pour in 2 cups of oatmeal, 2 cups of milk (I used a can of evaporated milk and topped it off with milk and 2 cups water.
Do NOT stir.
Cook overnight for 8 - 9 hours on low.
I started it at about 10:30 pm and turned it off at 5:15 am when we headed off to seminary. It was done. This was delicious and I'm going to do it again. Makes quite a bit of oatmeal. I'd say enough for four or five people. The children enjoyed it and said it was like apple crisp.

Week Fourteen

Finally had all the information I needed to do the taxes, so I did them last week. This week was spent catching up on all the undone things. So you'll be getting two weeks worth of information.

The tomatoes are pretty much done. They were good, but not great. Will try a different brand next year. These were yellow, a bit mushy and not as sweet as I like. The onions are growing, but not big enough to pull. the lettuce, spinach and cilantro are doing great and continue to supply food for the table.

I purchased a variety of fruits this week so our nutriblasts include, not necessarily at the same time, cantaloupe, watermelon, apple, pear, orange, banana, pineapple, avocado, papaya and grapes. I prefer adding these to kale and the rest of the family prefers spinach. I'm still adding whey to Thom's drink and will switch to bee pollen soon. Angel has me add walnuts and I add flax seeds to mine. Will add other seeds and nuts as money permits.

Weigh-in

Week Thirteen--160.9 pounds. Week Twelve--162.3 pounds. Beginning weight--188 pounds. One week loss--1.4 pounds. Total loss--27.1 pounds. Average 2 pounds per week.

Week Fourteen--161.9 pounds. (it's that time again and hopefully I'll stop at one pound in water weight gain as this is the most I've put on since starting this regiment. Sure beats the usual five to ten pound increase of the past). Week Thirteen--160.9 pounds. Beginning weight--188 pounds. One week loss :( gain--1 pound. Total loss 26.1 pounds. Average 1.86 pounds per week.

Benefits moment:

Pears--Pears are hypoallergenic--less likely to cause allergic reactions--and high in colon-clearing dietary fiber. The fresh, buttery fruit also contains free radical-fighting copper and vitamin C.

Pears are quite perishable once ripe, so grocery stores generally sell them a few days before they're ready to be eaten. By smooth, unblemished pears and set them on your counter to ripen. You'll know they're ready once their skin gives way to gentle pressure.

Week twelve

I really need to start the tank blog. Maybe I'll have time this week. It's crystal clear and doing well. Can't wait to start adding fish and corals. I've added some clean-up crew, but waiting for it to finish cycling. Ammonia is zero as are the Nitrites. Nitrates are still a bit high and I think I'll do a water change tomorrow, change the pads and work on the rock formation. I think it needs a bit of tweaking.

Still not doing well with the exercising. Have walked a couple times in the past week, but not long enough to call it legitimate.

The Garden

I'm still waiting for the tomatoes to ripen. The leaf lettuce is doing well enough for several salads a week. Not so for the spinach; I seem to get about one use a week. Will have to plant the spinach in a larger bed so more will be available.

Dinner

Actually had time to make a menu for the week. Tonight's dinner--Cauliflower Soup. Smells great. I can't wait until all are home so we can dig in. I used the slow cooker instead of cooking it on the stove and plan on using the potato masher instead of the blender.

We ate Taco Pie for dinner yesterday. I tried this recipe because it used mashed potatoes for the crust. I boiled potatoes and mashed them myself and then made the crust. I used ground turkey instead of ground beef. We also use Greek Yogurt instead of sour cream. I then used the potato water to make homemade rolls. Dinner was great and brought lots of compliments.

Weigh-in

Week twelve--162.3 pounds Week eleven--164 pounds Beginning weight--188 pounds. One week loss--1.7 pounds. Total loss--25.7. Average 2.14 pounds per week.

Benefits moment:

Peaches--Juicy succelent peaches are packed with Vitamin C, beta-carotene, and antioxidants. They are quickly joining the ranks of the ususally purple antioxidant-rich superfruits!

The process for choosing peaches and nectarines is almost identical. Buy fresh over frozen or canned if you can, and never buy canned peaches that have been packed in syrup. The best peaches will be fragrant, soft, and free of bruises. Ripe peaches should be eaten as soon as possible.
(copied from the Nutribullet pocket nutritionist)

We added peaches this week, but I think we didn't choose well as they didn't really add their flavor to the mix.

Week eleven

Tank is doing great. Hope to get its blog up this week.

I finally took a good long walk with our daughter and dogs. We adopted a little one in August and his belly is a bit chunky. He needs the walk as much as I do. The only complaint I have is that part of our neighborhood is unsafe to walk due to an aggressive dog. I need to find out its home and complain. It attacks and there's no way I can protect our dogs from it. I'm afraid it'll attack me since it has attacked our children when biking and chases vehicles. Calling for someone to pick it up doesn't work because they don't arrive in time to see it and no one seems to know where it belongs. Anyway, we took a walk, hope that's a start toward our exercising as well as eating better.

The Garden

I pulled the spent bean plants and am preparing to plant again. Growing season is almost done, here. Still waiting for the tomatoes to ripen so I can taste fresh tomatoes. We tried a couple of varieties I've never had before, so I'm looking forward to seeing them ripen and tasting them.

Okay, my promised happiness:

Saturday I stepped on the scales and they showed a two pound drop. I wasn't sure if I should believe it, so I waited and three days later it was still true.

Weigh-in--Beginning weight 188 pounds. Week eleven--164 pounds. Weight loss week ten to week eleven--three pounds. A total loss of twenty-four pounds in eleven weeks. That's a little over two pounds a week loss for the last eleven weeks. Yes! It is recommended one loses two to three pounds a week and I'm right there. My weight loss is doing well and as I remarked earlier, it feels great to be pulling up my pants.

Benefits Moment:

Papayas--Colorful and buttery-smooth papayas are renowned for their digestive benefits. They are also rich sources of antioxidants, folate, potassium, fiber, vitamin E, and vitamin K. These nutrients promote cardiovascular health and help protect against colon cancer.

Papayas with reddish-orange skin are ready to eat; those with yellow patches will take a few days to ripen. Avoid any overly soft or bruised papayas. Eat them fully ripened for the most antioxidant power!
(copied from the Nutribullet pocket nutritionist)

I read that eating papaya seeds has benefits too, so I've been adding them to my drink when I add papaya. Check out this article, "The Surprising Health Benefits of Papaya Seeds," and  make sure you check out, "Papaya Enzyme Side Effects and Warnings."

Happy healthy eating, finally exercising, losing weight and becoming healthier.

Wow! Can you say plateau?

I've been watching my weight go down, ever so slow. I've been thrilled because of my lifestyle and half-hearted attack at my overweight condition--I'm not exercising along with my control of eating. Saturday I stepped on the scale and received a great surprise. I didn't want to say anything because it was that much of a surprise. Thought I'd give it a day or two to say, 'ha ha, just kidding.' Well, it still says the same thing--165.2 pounds.

If you remember, I weighed in at 167 on Friday and had lost .4 pounds week 10, .5 pounds week 8, 1 pound week 7, etc. So slow, but going down. Well, Saturday morning showed a 2 pound loss and this has been maintained, even to this morning. It felt great Saturday having to constantly pull up my pants. I've officially lost enough weight to need a replacement.

Couldn't wait until Friday to give you this update. See you later.

By the way, the Gnocci Soup was wonderful. Will have to do that one again.

Benefits moment:

Oranges--Renowned for their concentration of Vitamin C, juicy and sweet oranges contain healing properties that have been associated with a wide variety of phytonutrient compounds. Citrus appears to offer the most significant protection against esophageal, orophayngeal/laryngeal (mouth, larynx and pharynx), and stomach cancers.

Choose fully ripened oranges for the most potent antioxidant power. Buy organic oranges whenever possible and avoid those with soft spots or mold. In general, smaller oranges with thinner skins will be the juiciest. Choose oranges with smooth skin which seem heavy for their size.

Week ten

Yes, I can count. Missed last week for a couple of reasons. One--I received a call on Thursday that a 65-gallon reef tank was available. All I had to do was take it down. I made arrangements to pick it up Friday as I had to tutor Thursday and there wasn't enough time to take it down and put it back up. I did go over to the house and help pack and remove donations for a couple of hours. Friday I spent most of the day working on removal of donations, finally attacking the tank about 9 pm. We arrived home shortly before midnight and were in bed about 1:30 am. We set up the tank, added water and the live rock. It took a couple of days for the tank to clear so I could arrange the live rock and add the sand. That was the end of my abilities. Ended up hiring a maintenance guy to clear up the disastrous results of the dirty sand. The fish and live corals were added Wednesday evening. The tank is now beautiful. I'll add a link to Inspector Meiko Luv's blog when it's ready. Two--We woke up early Saturday morning to leave for Naples, Florida. We'd planned a weekend with friends. My husband insisted, "No work." So, I left the computer home.

We left early Saturday morning to travel to Naples with a couple we enjoy spending time and travels with. We visited the Flight 592 Memorial, Clyde Butcher's Gallery, The Pier in Naples and Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. I didn't bring my Nutribullet as I'm not yet sure of how to travel with it. I'm really pleased to say I only put on half a pound over the weekend. We brought sandwich stuff, I used a flour tortilla for my sandwich of thinly sliced ham and roast beef and ate mixed fruits. Dinner was ribs. Sunday we ate the continental breakfast--oatmeal, boiled egg, bagel and yogurt. Dinner was Five Guys Burgers.

I used a lot of greens from the garden in my drinks. Namely the spinach and leaf lettuce. I love fresh green beans and eat a large handful each day, uncooked, straight from the bush. The tomatoes are not yet ready.

One thing that has been on my mind is rut. I make great efforts to ensure I don't end up in a rut with my blasts. I keep a staple of spinach, lettuce, apples, pears, grapes, oranges and bananas. I add mangoes, blueberries, strawberries (I only add three and you sure can taste them), avocados, cantelope, papaya and raspberries as desired. I thought about peaches today, but decided I had a pretty good variety for now. Will add them next week.

Weigh-in--Beginning weight 188 pounds. Week nine--167.4. This week--167. A total loss of  21 pounds in 10 weeks. You may think I'm discouraged with only .4 loss in weight. But I'm not. If you remember, I put on a half a pound over the weekend. So I lost almost a pound. Any loss is going in the right direction and I know I need to exercise to make it stick.

Benefits moment:

Nectarines--Floral and juicy nectarines are loaded with antioxidants, which prevent free radicals in th environment from entering your body, prolonging the aging process and helping to maintain glowing skin and a healthy body weight.

Look for bruise-free nectarines with an even, deep red hue. The best fruits give off a sweet aroma and yield under light pressure. Their season lasts from late spring to early fall.
(copied from the Nutribullet pocket nutritionist)

What's for Sunday dinner? Gnocci Soup.

Happy healthy eating, thinking about exercising (do you think it'll work like it does on the Jetsons?), losing weight and becoming healthier.

Week Eight: slow and steady

I'm just a normal person changing my lifestyle slower than I learned the present one. This blog contains my successes and failures. Follow along if you'd like. I'm not regimented or one sided. I'm enjoying the added fruits and vegetables, but I'm not giving up my meat. I'm losing weight a slower pace than I put it on, but it's coming off and people are seeing  it. I do have a goal--to be healthier, but I'm realistic and hope those that are following are having as much success as I am. Don't feel pressured to lose, just do what you can with the budget you have and together we'll be healthier than we were last month or the month before.

I've been fighting a cold for two weeks and I think it's finally on its way out. I spent several days lazing around and doing little. Still tire easily, but seem to be getting stronger. I added blueberries and oranges to my nutriblasts to encourage my immune system. I also took zicam and emergen-C as well to help me with the fight.

The garden is producing beans, spinach, leaf lettuce, garlic chives, and cilantro. The tomatoes are growing, but not yet ready to pick. I purchased some strawberry plants and will get them planted soon. Not sure what else I'll be able to grow as it's getting hotter. It was 85 degrees yesterday. Seems to be the norm for our winter temperatures this year. Our mango tree went into bloom early and has very few mangos. I hope the later trees bloom well or we're going to have a poor crop this year.

I put on a pound this week (that time of the month again). I'm a little upset it was more than last month at this same time, but I think the cold had something to do with it. I'm also under a lot of stress to get a lot of things done, taxes, books listed from our closed bookstore, money to pay the bills and no job, etc. We're going to Naples next weekend with some friends to forget about our cares and enjoy the ocean and other wonders Naples has to offer. Hopefully that will help bring down the stress factor.

Weigh-in--Beginning weight 188 pounds. Last weeks weight 166.9. This weeks weight 167.9. So that a total loss of 20.1 pounds and lots of compliments about how good I'm looking.

Benefits moment:

Grapes--Grapes work absolute wonders for the heart. The polyphenols within their skins decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease and protect good cholesterols within your body.

Choose grapes that are plump and wrinkle-free. Grapes should be fully intact with no leaking juices and firmly attached to a healthy-looking stem. Green grapes should have a slightly yellowish hue, and red grapes should be mostly red.
(copied from the Nutribullet pocket nutritionist)

Locally we have the choice between seedless red, green and black grapes and red seeded grapes. I looked for concord, but didn't find any. I use both in our nutriblasts. I don't know if they help with the arthritis or if it's the combinations used in the nutriblasts, but when we added grapes, my husband quit complaining about his wrists and fingers. When he went several days without his blast, he complained the pain was back. So, I make sure all his drinks contain grapes.

What's for Sunday dinner? A turkey breast cooked in the slow cooker, with potatoes, stuffing, gravy and homemade rolls. (Almost every Sunday has homemade rolls followed by brownies, hot from the oven, and ice cream for desert. And yes, I've been losing weight even with this type of dinner each Sundays)

Happy healthy eating, thinking about exercising (do you think it'll work like it does on the Jetsons?), losing weight and becoming healthier.

Is this really week seven?

I'd like to add stuff more often, but I find myself really busy right now. Anyway, here's my weekly update.

The garden got it's first really rain since I planted it. The beans are almost ready to pick. I ate one this morning anyway. There are tiny tomatoes on the biggest tomato plant, so we'll be eating them soon too. We've transplanted the garlic chives into the herb pot and moved it to a sunnier location. We've harvested the spinach twice now and they're about ready for another harvest. The lettuce is about half way to picking. Can't wait to have a fresh salad with them. Nothing else we've planted seems to have taken and it's getting close to the end of growing season. So I guess it'll be next year for other foods.

We cooked another chicken in our slow cooker and then made chicken and dumplings with the broth we cooked out of the bones. Loving that pot more and more.

Purchased kale, blueberries and strawberries and have been adding them to our Nutriblasts. We're down to our last container of mangos from our trees. They came into season early this year and have so few. They should be coming in season now, so I don't think we're going to get much of a crop this year. Cold front in this weekend. Don't think it's going to get too cold for the garden. The only problem I'm seeing with all the heat we've been having is growing season will be short. Once it get's to a certain temperature at night, stuff stops setting and most vegetables stop producing.

Weigh-in--Beginning weight 188 lbs. Last weeks weight 167.9. This weeks weight 166.9. Not a huge loss, but I'm really ecstatic. It's that time of the month again and I've lost some weight without exercising. I'm simply drinking one to two NutriBlasts a day. Anyway, this is a total loss of 21.1 pounds in about seven weeks. Can't complain when I'm not doing all I can to lose the weight and keep it off.

Benefits moment:

Figs--Sweet, luscious figs are a surprising source of calcium, which assists in building bone density. Figs are also a wonderful source of dietary fiber, which aids in weight management and has been shown to help fight breast cancer.

Fresh figs are highly perishable, so only buy them a day or two in advance. Look for figs with a rich, deep color. They should be plump and tender, but not mushy, and smell mildly sweet--never sour.

Happy healthy eating, hopefully exercising, losing weight and becoming healthier.

Weekly Update

I know this is late. Our son's Eagle Scout Project was today, February 9, 2013 and I wasn't able to post since I was helping him get everything together.

The garden is doing well. I've been eating spinach since Wednesday, February 6th and soon will be eating lettuce. The tomatoes are blooming, but I'm concerned about the lack of winter and the fact the groundhog didn't see his shadow and spring is almost here. (wouldn't know it with all the snow falling) As soon as the nights stay above 80 degrees tomatoes won't set. It's been in the 80's during the day for most of the winter. So much so the fruit trees are confused and already growing fruits. The beans are producing and I'm hoping to start eating from them next week. Not sure if I'll plant anything else since it feels like summer is already here and gardens don't do well during our summer months.

We made a beef broth with the slow cooker and then turned it into onion soup. It's not fantastic. I'll have to try again later and with a different recipe. If I find one I like, I'll make sure you get it.

Found another good recipe for my Nutriblast this week:

1/2 carrot or 5 baby carrots
handful of parsely
1 lemon, peeled
1/2 apple cored and seeded
1-inch piece of ginger (I cut it down to 1/8th as it was too strong)
1/2 avocado (learned today with all the snow up north, farmer's down here are having difficulty getting their avocados up to you. Hope you can find some.)
add water until approximately 2/3rds of the food is covered with water and mix.
(from the NutriBullet user guide & recipe book)

Weigh-in -- Beginning weight 188 lbs. This weeks weight 167.9. A total loss of 20.1 pounds in approximately 6 weeks. I still want to bike and walk more. Guess that will come when I'm done with all the books I'm trying to sell.

Benefits moment:

Cranberries -- With their anti-inflammatory qualities and high levels of vitamin C, cranberries work wonders for the body's cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, and immune systems.

Fresh cranberries are plump, deep red, and quite firm. Those with a darker hue contain higher concentrations of beneficial anthocyanin compounds. Cranberries can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 20 days. It is normal for berries to feel a bit damp when taken out of the fridge. This does not indicate spoilage unless the berries are discolored, sticky, leathery, or tough.

Garden Pictures

As promised, the pictures have been downloaded. I'm only putting up the most recent. Taken 2/3/2013. The beans are in bloom and the tomatoes have finally settled in their new location. We'll be eating spinach soon. You can barely see them near them near the top of the pictures. Unfortunately the individual bed pictures didn't come out well. Will take them again soon.

The sticks are for support to the tomatoes and to keep the cats out. Next pictures should show beans growing.

Time for my weekly update

I finished clearing out the storage unit. Spent today organizing the books in our borrowed unit. I was exhausted yesterday and took a nap. I'm much better today. I'm working on a few articles and placing books on amazon.com. I'm looking forward to the total end of our bookstore adventure. Once the books are gone, I'm sure I'll feel free.

Still haven't managed to download the garden pictures from the camera. Took more today since the garden has changed a lot since last week. Hopefully my husband will have time soon. He's going to be with the Boy Scouts this weekend. They are participating in the Barefoot Mailman hike. It takes two days to complete.

Each time I walk out the front door I look at my bike and wonder where the time is going. I really want to add biking as my exercise, but I haven't done a thing about it. Guess I need to do more with less wishing.

Not much else done with the slow cooker, but we did have a really good meal. I purchased tostadas, a round, thick, crunchy tortilla, and covered them with refried beans, meat (this time I used ground turkey, but most of the time I use chicken), lettuce, tomatoes (sometimes I use salsa),shredded cheese (I use a Mexican mixture or sharp cheddar), and homemade Greek yogurt (in the past we've used sour cream). Our family really likes this and it's a simple meal. Usually one or two are enough, but our growing son ate three. There's always leftovers for a quick snack the next day.

Here's a great article about how "Healthy Eating will Enrich every part of your Life" It covers a great deal in such a short article and much of it is what I've been doing to work with my weight loss. The Nutribullet is a  major part, but not the only part of my 'getting healthier' attitude.

Weigh-in--Beginning weight 188 lbs. This weeks weight 171.8 lbs. A total loss of 16.2 lbs since 12/26/2012 (approximately 5 weeks). Clothing is starting to fit. Buttons are now closing easily. Tucked in shirts don't feel so tight. The weight loss is noticeable to the public and the complements are frequent.

Benefits moment:

Cantaloupes--An excellent source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, potassium and folate, cantaloupes are wonderful for promoting lung and vision health.

Choose cantaloupes without bruises or soft spots. They should be heavy for their size and have a "hollow" sound when tapped.

Weekly Update

I found a really nice website, FamilyShare.com that covers a lot of subjects. I found this article interesting and even tried "The Green Goblin." It was delicious and will now be one of our choice smoothies.

I put on 1/2 a pound this week. Why am I not upset? Do you remember the post last Friday? I commented on the usual weight gain at 'that time of the month'. Well, I usually put on five, sometimes as much as ten pounds. The doctor used to give me water pills to help on the heavier months. Anyway, I pretty much maintained my weight since last weeks weigh-in. You'll see that later.

I've taken pictures of the garden and when my husband downloads the camera, I'll put them up. I still haven't added any vegetables, but what's there is doing great. The seeds I planted from the neighbors were too old and they didn't germinate. I've planted some seeds from various vegetables we've eaten and will move them over to the garden if they grow.

I've been really busy emptying our storage unit, so I haven't had much time to blog. As the title says, this is an update of the past week.

Our slow cooking adventures:

We loved the Butternut Squash Soup so much, I'm planning on making it again this week. The Orange Chicken didn't turn out so well. Will have to try it again when I'm not so pressed for time. We also made Hearty Calico Bean Dip. A recipe from Crock-Pot, the original and #1 brand slow cooker.

3/4 pound ground beef (we used turkey)
1/2 pound sliced bacon, crisp-cooked and crumbled (left this one out)
1 can (16 ounces) baked beens
1 can (15 ounces) Great Northern beans, rinsed and drained (used dried beans)
1 can (15 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained (used dried black beans)
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 cup packed brown sugar (was a bit too sweet)
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon cinder vinegar
1 teaspoon yellow mustard
Tortilla chips

  1. Brown ground beef in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, stirring to break up meat. Drain fat. Spoon meat into 4-quart Crock-Pot slow cooker.
  2. Add bacon, beans, onion, brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar and mustard to slow cooker; mix well.
  3. Cover; cook on Low 4 hours or on high 2 hours. Serve with Tortilla chips. (makes 12 servings)
It's a bit too sweet. I cut the sugar to 1/4 cup and will see if that's any better.

We loved this. As a matter of fact, we're having this again tonight. There was even enough left for several lunches.

We also cooked whole chicken in the slow cooker. We placed it in the cooker and rubbed fresh garlic and rosemary and left it to cook. After dinner we recooked the carcass, after removing all the meat, in it's juices along with leftover vegetable parts we'd been saving. (these come from peeling potatoes, cutting off the tips, etc. The stuff you usually throw away.) We let that cook on low overnight and then removed all the bones and vegetable rubbish. We added the leftover chicken meat from the previous days meal and dumplings. This was the best chicken and dumplings we've had in a long time.

Still haven't really added exercise to my regiment. I really need to and hope that will happen once our storage unit is empty.

Weigh-in--Beginning weight 188 pounds; this week 174.6. A total of 13.4 pounds since 12/26/2012 (approximately four weeks). I look forward to next week getting back on schedule.

Benefits moment:

Blueberries--Blueberries contain a wide range of micronutrients, including manganese, vitamin C, and vitamin K. These power fruits are also high in fiber, and renowned for teir anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting chemicals.

Look for dark-blue blueberries--don't worry too much about scent. They should feel heavy in your hand, and have very few to no greenish or purplish berries in the package.

Wow! Didn't expect that

I planned to write this yesterday, but life got in the way. I thought I might get some pictures of the garden today, but it's dark now. Thought I might bike, but that didn't happen either. So, why the title? I'll get to that.

I saw a commercial selling pills to pop when hunger attacks your diet. Reminded me of what I had read about why many diets fail. Diets that say you can eat only this or that or restrict your calories tend to fail when hunger strikes. These are diets tend to be too restrictive. Hunger comes because you aren't meeting your needs. Most often you're not eating the foods that your body needs to maintain function. One must also have an attitude of wanting to change. The problem is many diets don't really give you a variety. Most of us, including me, eat the wrong stuff. I'm learning to eat the right stuff and finding just as many delicious choices. I read that one should concentrate on changing their food choices from unhealthy foods to healthy foods rather than watching the scale, but the scale does indicate the value of your changes.

I am watching the scale to see the choices I'm making are helping me lose weight. I'm also monitoring how I feel so I know the choices are healthy and beneficial. (feeling healthy and energetic is more important and should naturally lead to weight loss) My goal is to get down to about 125 lbs. I'm also planning to choose foods that will help against my genetics. Namely, heart disease (including heart attacks), diabetes, cancer and thyroid. I expect the food to help lower the chances of these affecting me. Weight-loss is an important part of many of the above.

So why the title? The first week I lost 7 lbs. A lot of which I'm sure was water due to the fact I put on a lot during the week before. The second week I lost almost 4 lbs. (recommended weight loss seems to be anywhere from 1/2 lb per week to 3 lbs with the average being about 2lbs) The third week I lost 2 lbs. Since I didn't write this yesterday here are my stats:  188 lbs 12/26/2012, 174.1 1/18/2013. So total weight loss to date--14 lbs an average of about 5 lbs per week. I was surprised what the scale read this morning because three days this week my weight stayed the same and the last couple were extremely close. I didn't expect to drop a little over 1 lb since yesterday's reading.

So this weeks recommendation is to watch your attitude so that you don't blame yourself for what's not happening, unless it really is. Most of the time it's because the diet you chose is too restrictive. You need to find a weight loss program that moves you from bad foods (you know, the ones that make you feel bad even while you're trying to convince yourself you feel good) to good foods (the ones that really make you feel good and healthy). And no worries if now and then you choose a food empty of nutrition or health values. You're entitled. Just remember to keep the right attitude.

Benefits moment:

Blackberries-This magic purple berry is packed with antioxidants and contains fiber, folate, and vitamins C and K. Blackberry seeds are also rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, which can be released through the Nutribullet's extraction blades.

Look for blackberries that are slightly heavy and firm to the touch. Avoid wrinkled, shriveled, or dried-out berries. There should be little to no evidence of juice at the bottom of the container.

Plateau

I seem to be on a plateau with my weight. I need to add exercise to my weight loss program, but haven't found the time. I need to decide it's importance and make it. I wake up in the morning and make a blast. I then read scriptures and prepare for my Sunday School lesson. Then I work on my writing stopping, now and then, to ship items I've sold online.

Good news for my husband, Thom. He says he's almost lost a full size to fit into his former pants. That's great and I'm excited for him. I don't seem to have lost a size, but my weight loss, as of today, is about 12 pounds.

The garden is ready for more planting. Need the time and money to add more. I spent last Saturday hiking in the Everglades--six miles--and didn't manage to get pictures of the garden. I was also unable to go to the Farmer's Market and pick up my fruits and vegetables. I've been watching for those that sell on the streets, but they don't seem to be out this week. I'll try to get some pictures this weekend and hit the local market early. I plan to move our books and stuff out of our unit, so I hope to remember to take the pictures before the day is gone.

Benefits moment:

Bananas--Bananas are easy to digest and contain potassium, fiber, manganese, and vitamin C, making them an excellent food for children and those recovering from illness. They assist with sleep and enhance immune function, and also assist with the absorption and preservation of calcium in the body.

Choose bananas that are free of bruises.Bananas are best eaten when they begin to show a few tiny dark spots. Ripe bananas can be stored at room temperature for 3-4 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks (the skin will brown, but the fruit inside will be fine). To freeze bananas, remove the skin and place in a sealed plastic bag.

One thing I'm always looking for is easy, already prepared foods. That leads to poor choices in eating. I've been using my crock pot more since receiving the Nutribullet. I made butternut squash soup. It was really good and, since no one else in the family like it, I had several meals that only required me to reheat in the microwave. The second meal I made was called Calico Bean Dip. We ate it as a meal and it lasted through several quick meals. Tomorrow I'll be cooking Orange Chicken. Our local grocery store had whole chicken's on sale, today was the last day, so I purchased one and plan on cooking it in the crock pot as well.

I know, it's not what you want to read that I'm eating. This is me. I'm not ready to totally give up meats, but I have cut the portion sizes and am purchasing less. Maybe one day I'll be eating even less, but I'm not ready at this time.

Happy healthy eating, losing weight and becoming healthier.

I Feel Free

and exhilarated. I'm done with the toxin blast and am able to experiment as I test different mixtures of fruits, greens, nuts and seeds. Made blasts with apples, pears, bananas, mango, spinach, romaine lettuce and ginger. Not all at once, made several different blasts. Decided the romaine lettuce belongs in salad for now. Will need to find something that's able to overpower it's slight bitter taste. The mango's are from our tree and I was so happy to put them in. Yummy.

We purchased red leaf  and romaine lettuce, walnuts, red grapes in addition to replenishing our depleted fruits and vegetables. The whole family is still excited about our new choices and are slowly moving from refined foods to raw foods.

The squash soup is for later today. Smells great. Can't wait to try it. Will use the Nutribullet to puree it.

Okay, I know I was supposed to do this yesterday, but I was missing some information and so I drafted this post until I could find it.

Weigh in-- Beginning weight 188 this week 177.5. Weight loss slower than the first week, but more in line to what is recommended.

Benefits moment:

Avocadoes--Rich in vitamins and minerals, avacados are often considered a perfect food. Each avocado contains a surprising 4 grams of protein; that's more than any other fruit! Plus avocados contain the highest concentrations of monounsaturated fats among all fruits, compounds that are essential to healthy brain development.

Choose firm but tender avocados with no soft spots. Ripe avocados will have a consistent, slightly soft exterior. Avoid avocados with blemishes, broken skin, or dents.

Happy learning to eat for a healthier life.

Recipes and boosts

Finally sat down and made up a meal plan. We've been blasting for almost two weeks with the toxin blast. Time to start our 6 week program, our way.

Tomorrow I'll be crock potting a Butternut Squash Soup

2 pounds butternut squash, rinsed, peeled, seeded and chopped into 1-inch cubes
1 firm crisp apple, pealed, seeded and chopped
1 yellow onion, chopped
5 cups chicken broth
1 tablespoon curry powder, sweet or hot
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
Salt and black pepper to tast
1/4 cup chopped dried cranberries
  1. Place squash, apple and onion in 4-quart crock-pot slow cooker
  2. mix together stock, curry powder and cloves in small bowl. Pour mixture into crock-pot slow cooker. Cover; cook on low 5 - 5 1/2 hours or on high 4 hours or until vegetables are tender.
  3. Process in blender in 2 or 3 batches to desired consistency. Add salt and pepper. Garnish with cranberries, if desired.
makes 6-8 servings
Recipe from Crock-Pot slow cooker recipe booklet

We have most of the above from our organic shares. If you're local check out Healthy Habits Organic Produce for their upcoming share.

We also are moving up in the world of choices as our bodies have been adjusting to the blast. We'll be adding lettuce and kale to the spinach choice. For boosts we'll add sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, and almonds. Many of which we already have in stock.

We'll maintain the 2 handful rule for the greens, nuts are added at 1/8-1/4 cup and seeds at 1 tablespoon. Our fruit choices are going up too. We'll continue keeping apples, bananas and pears in stock. We also have oranges in stock. We'll eat what fruits come from our backyard. Right now we're getting papaya and avacado.

Our garden is thriving. Beans are well underway as are the cherry tomatoes and onions. The spinach is doing great and the garlic chives look great. Can't wait to use them. Time for more pictures. Hopefully my husband can get them Saturday.

Benefits (I'll cover one food item each time I post):

Apples-Believed to fight several types of cancer, antioxidant-rich apples may very well be key to "keeping the doctor away." They are also helpful in fighting heart disease, weight gain, and high cholesterol. The fiber contained in apples is vital in preventing cholesterol reabsorption.

Always look for apples without any softness or bruises. Green apples that have taken on a yellow hue are likely to be past their prime.

One Week Review

As you may remember, I received a Nutribullet for Christmas. Today marks one week of two juicings a day since Christmas. This has been a fun learning experience. Here's the only way I know to show my progress:

First Weigh-in   One Week Weigh-in
188 lbs                       181.1
F-37.2%                    37.2  (I think the F is for fat. Lost the information booklet and can't find the information on the net)
W-45%                      44.9  (Assuming W is for water--as above)
B-5.1%                       5.1   (Again, assuming B is for bone)
M-32.6%                   32.6  (M for muscle)
Cal-2883                   2885  (number of calories needed to maintain weight) Definitely don't want to maintain this weight, so I guess I need to eat less calories and exercise more.

In my previous post I planted an edible garden. Yesterday I added another bed and planted two types of spinach. My next bed will be lettuce. I covered the beds with dried banana leaves to stop our cat who decided it was his litter box. When the beans and peppers (not yet planted) grow in the block openings, I'm sure they'll act as a fence.

Our wonderful neighbors, The Edgar's, gave us some seeds and a couple of hanging pots. I've planted the strawberries, cherry and regular tomatoes and sweet basil. We'll keep you updated with pictures as the garden grows. They also gave me a bicycle. So glad. Mine was stolen off my porch. This one stays on the back porch. So exercising with a bike is now possible.

Here's to continued weight loss and healthier living through a better diet.
